Thor's Rage: Slot Overview

Few slots have sent ripples through the industry like Pragmatic Play's hit release Gates of Olympus, as barely a week seems to go by without referencing it in a review in some way. The title is Thor's Rage, and it seems that software provider Red Tiger wanted a turn with the proven scatter pays, cascade, and multiplier symbol combo. As well as the usual parts, the studio has also managed to wedge a wild symbol into the game that not only substitutes but converts to a multiplier once it has done so. Will these additions be enough to muscle Thor's Rage to the top of the scatter-paying podium?

Have to admit, Thor does look a little ragey in this game. He stands next to the 6x5 gaming area, eyes a-blazing, hammer in hand, which he uses to beat the reels every so often when wilds land. Yes, there are wilds in Thor's Rage, which are not super regular additions to scatter-paying slots. They also helpfully transform into multiplier symbols, too, but we'll get to them soon. How about we first spend a moment to absorb the snowy mountainous terrain, the statues, and the lightning effects and see if it's enough to generate any sort of theme-induced fury.

Thor's Rage is a scatter pays slot, so wins are created by landing at least 8 matching symbols anywhere on the grid. Winning symbols are removed, causing others to fall downwards, and new symbols are added at the top in order to fill all of the spaces. Chain reactions continue in this way as long as wins keep appearing on the reels. Gamblers are able to wager 10 c to $/€10 in this highly volatile slot, where the default RTP comes in at 95.68%.

Five gems line the bottom of the paytable, followed by a ring, a gauntlet, a helmet, and a hammer as the higher-paying symbols. Scatter wins of 8-9 OAK are worth 0.3 to 10 times the bet, while 12+ OAK hits pay 3 to 100 times the bet. Wild symbols substitute anything except scatters. After taking part in a win, wilds do not disappear in the chain reaction but transform into multiplier symbols instead.

Multipliers

Multiplier symbols have values of x2 to x1,000. At the end of a chain reaction sequence, the total win is multiplied by the sum of all multipliers to calculate the final winning total.

Free Spins

Landing 4, 5, or 6 scatters awards 15 free spins on top of a payout of 5x, 20x, or 100x the bet, respectively. During free spins, the multiplier that take part in wins are added up and saved above the reels as a Total Multiplier, which is not reset until the bonus round ends. Each time a new multiplier takes part in a win, it is added to the current Total Multiplier, which then applies to the win. Wins that occur with no new multiplier symbol present are not affected by the Total Multiplier. Hitting 3 or more scatters awards an extra +5 free spins.

Thor's Rage: Slot Verdict

Gates of Olympus was released a few years ago, in 2021, so Thor's Rage is a little late to the party. No matter, Red Tiger has come out with a competitor, which largely follows suit while making a few adjustments to help it stand on its own two feet. To an extent. First, there's the deity switch, where one was Zeus of Ancient Greek belief, this one is Thor of Norse belief. Maybe not an enormous difference, in some ways, and while Thor's Rage is the newer game by a few years, it is graphically on about the same level. It's on about the same level in terms of gameplay as well, based on the tried and true mix of scatter pays, cascades, and multiplier symbols.

Red Tiger wasn't in a total replica mood when it made Thor's Fury, though. There is a difference or two to the game. One is larger than Gates of Olympus' maximum multiplier symbol value, tipping the scales at x1,000, though this is equalled by Gates of Olympus 1000, which also boasts a higher winning potential than Thor's Rage's 10,000x the bet. This game does have a wild symbol, though, which the Gates games don't come with. The wild mixes things up to a degree, and the way it reverts to a multiplier symbol after substituting in a win rather than just tumbling out of existence is a nice touch.

The wild symbol on its own isn't enough to hide the fact Thor's Rage is very close in just about every other way to one of the most popular slots out there. But it's hard to judge Red Tiger too harshly for this since casino game makers regularly 'borrow' ideas from each other like kleptomaniacal magpies. Scatter pay enthusiasts were probably already well served by the slots already at hand, but well, for a Thor version with a wild to multiplier alternative, you could do worse than Thor's Rage.
