Tsar Wars: Slot Overview

Yes, Tsar Wars, a game that blends the iconic sci-fi film Star Wars with figures from Russian history, in a slot, the likes of which you just don’t see a lot of. Backing up the creative theme is a cluster pays mechanic feeding a symbol collection feature that can lead to various free spins rounds, while dropping three modifiers linked to three main characters in a vaguely Moon Princess kind of way.

For Tsar Wars, we’re travelling at light speed to a galaxy far, far East where the evil Tsar Lord Nikolai II is the ruler, but where rebellion is brewing. On a mission to bring balance to the galaxy are three outlaws – Princess Leianin, Han Stalin and Marx Skytalker, standing tall and traversing the stars on, get this, a spaceship called the Century Eagle, as they face off against their greatest adversary, Darth Rasputin, the tsar’s side enforcer. It’s a lot to take in, and Tsar Wars provides an audiovisual cacophony of elements to absorb and assimilate as best as possible. It somehow works quite well, and as far as Star Wars parodies goes this could be the greatest thing since the 1987 Mel Brooks comedy film Space Balls.

Unsurprisingly, Tsar Wars is a highly volatile slot, but at 8 out of 10 rated, it’s not as volatile as some of the stuff Nolimit City makes. Four RTP configurations have been designed for various markets, where the highest return value is 96.01%-96.05%. It is possible to wager 20c to $/€100 on individual spins, or if players prefer, they can activate boosters or feature buys for set costs.

Cluster wins occur when 5 or more matching symbols are connected horizontally and/or vertically on the 6×6 game area. After a cluster win pays, the symbols explode, allowing new ones to fall in, repeating again if a new win occurs. The symbols are 4 lower-paying icons of the revolution, then three character symbol high pays. Cluster wins 5 OAK in size pay 0.1x to 0.6x, increasing to 2.5x to 50x for 15+ OAK. Big Symbols

Symbols come in sizes of 1×1, 2×2, and 3×3. If there is no room for a Big symbol to drop, the gaps beneath it are filled with symbols of the same type as the Big symbol.

Multiplier

The multiplier value is displayed outside the game grid. After each new avalanche, the multiplier increases by +1.

Trapped Wild

The Trapped Wild is shown with a highlight effect on a symbol. When a symbol with a Trapped Wild highlight is part of a win or is removed by an xBomb Wild, it transforms into a wild symbol and is kept for the next avalanche. The Trapped Wild effect can trigger on all symbols and all sizes.

Character Features

The three modifiers linked to the three characters are:

• Wild Rush – when triggered, 2 to 5 regular paying symbols are transformed into wild symbols.
• Force Shift – when triggered, 1, 2, or 3 regular pay symbols are transformed into another regular paying symbol of the same or different kind.
• xBomb Wild – transforms 1 to 3 regular paying symbols into xBomb Wilds when triggered. An xBomb Wild substitutes for any symbol except the Tsar Side Bonus symbol. All xBomb Wilds explode before the next collapse, removing adjacent symbols except Tsar Side Bonus and wild symbols. If a Big symbol is adjacent, the entire symbol is removed.

Bonus Features

• Destruction Spin – The Destruction Meter is filled when 25 winning symbols have been collected. When the meter is full and there are no more wins, players win a Destruction Spin where Wild Rush, Force Shift, and xBomb Wild are guaranteed to trigger at least once. The meter resets after each spin.
• Revolution Spins – If the Destruction Meter is filled with 25 winning symbols during a Destruction Spin, players win Revolution Spins. Players choose Wild Rush, Force Shift, or xBomb Wilds with 5, 6, or 7 free spins, respectively. The selected feature triggers at least once per spin, while the other features trigger at random. Revolution Spins and Tsar Side Spins start with an x15 multiplier. When the Destruction Meter is filled with 30 winning symbols, +2 spins are awarded, and the total win multiplier is doubled. The meter resets after each spin.
• Tsar Side Spins – When a Tsar Side Bonus symbol lands during a Destruction Spin and the Destruction Meter is filled with 25 winning symbols, 6 Tsar Side Spins trigger. On each spin, Wild Rush, Force Shift, and xBomb Wild trigger at least once.

xBoost 1 and xBoost 2 cost 5x and 12x the bet, and guarantee 1 or 2 features (Wild Rush, Force Shift, or xBomb Wild), respectively. xBoost 3 costs 30x and the player is guaranteed a Destruction Spin, while xBoost 4 at 60x the bet guarantees at least 1 Trapped Wild of size 2×2 or 3×3. ‘Welcome to the Tsar Wars’ goes the intergalactic head-bopping tune, and yeah, Tsar Wars. How do they think of this stuff? Few studios have both the creative impulse to come up with such an idea and the drive to see it through to a final game. It makes you wonder, not only must Nolimit City brainstorming sessions be a hoot, but imagine the ideas it deems inappropriate to go into an actual slot. Picture a folder on a computer at NLC HQ, brimming with ideas unfit for mass human consumption, leaking psychic green fluid across the screen, too inappropriate to publish, but too amusing to delete, held for a time when tastes and sensibilities are ready to handle them.

When reaching for a comparison in terms of Tsar Wars’ gameplay, Moon Princess was the one that stuck out, though it’s hard to put the two games in direct competition with each other. Three heroes and their associated powers drive the game, but instead of Love, Star and Storm, we’ve got the knee-slappingly named Princess Leianin, Han Stalin and Marx Skytalker. Each power can trigger at random, but they’re more effective when the various free spin features are active. The interlinked special spins concept, if not completely original, is clever, allowing lucky players to dive deeper and deeper when the collection of winning symbols is going well. Landing a Tsar Side Bonus symbol at the right time also helps players go all the way to Tsar Side Spins. Anticipation is held by the will-it-or-won’t-it symbol collection progress, while side features, such as the ELK-esque Big symbols, help keep the suspense up.

Defeat Darth Rasputin and the biggest reward is a 19,775x max win, presented during a Bombs Away sequence. Like an insidious dark side of the Force incursion, a number of outside influences can be detected here, but come on, Tsar Wars? There’s nothing like Tsar Wars in this galaxy, a slick symbol collecting cluster pays game, with a bag of features, and an even greater bag of amusing parodic attitude.
